- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2016The third film in the Divergent film series, based on the books by Veronica Roth. The Divergent Series: Allegiant continues the story that began in Divergent and Insurgent. Following Jeanine's defeat at the end of Insurgent, the people of Chicago were ready to head out into the world beyond the wall after discovering a message from the Founders, but Evelyn (Naomi Watts) has other ideas and once again seals the wall and attempts to take over by force becoming yet another dictator. This causes a divide inside Chicago as the forces loyal to Evelyn begin a series of mock trials executing many of the people of Abnegation while those opposed follow the people of Amity led by Octavia Spencer.
Our main characters Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) rescue Tris's brother from the mock trials and head over the wall along with several others and soon discover the Bureau (ledy by Jeff Daniels) who hope to use Tris in finding a way of curing the imperfect (most of the people of Chicago) but in their pursuit of a cure they have neglected Chicago allowing it to run amok.
The film continues the great story and action seen in the first two Divergent films and the same great cast returns (Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Naomi Watts, Ray Stevenson, Octavia Spencer and Daniel Dae Kim) along with newcomers (Jeff Daniels, Xander Berkeley, Bill Skarsgard).
The film ends with a cliffhanger which is to be concluded in a 4th film which may end up being a special TV movie if Lionsgate gets their way rather than releasing the final film in theaters as originally planned. This film was much better than people have given it credit for and it was the poor turn out in theaters for this third installment that is resulting in Lionsgate changing their intitial plans. Give this one a chance on home video and show Lionsgate that we do want to see the final installment.
Great special effects and post-apocalyptic environments are on view in this installment. A great third film for the franchise.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2016This movie is the best of all 3 in the Divergent Series! The film starts out with the trials of some of the people who served Janine. One of which gets executed. Evelyn has taken over as the leader. Four is able to free Caleb and save him from punishment out of respect for Tris. Tris and Four and a few others are able to escape over the wall. Tori is shot down by Edgar while attempting to escape. The rest of the group make it over the wall safely and are rescued by the bureau. Meanwhile, Chicago is at war. David, the leader of the bureau, thanks Tris for opening the Box since she is the only "Pure" Divergent. David was attempting a plan to cure all of the "Damaged" people for centuries and had only succeeded at creating 1 "Pure" human being, Tris, in all of history. Over time, Tris starts to really trust David. Four decides to go visit The Fringe where he uncovers David's real hidden agenda. David keeps Tris and Four separated on purpose as a result because Four warns Tris that David can't be trusted. Tris doesn't listen to Four regarding that, at first. Later on, Tris is able to understand the reason David shouldn't be trusted. David is secretly trying to help Evelyn destroy Chicago's citizens by contaminating them with tear gas that can wipe the memories of anyone who comes into contact with it. Evelyn starts to release the tear gas but Tris is able to stop it's release at the last minute, thereby, saving the entire city. The film ends with Tris and Four giving each other a big hug without realizing that David is also watching from the background. Very entertaining Movie. Get this movie and see for yourself. It's the best! I can't wait for the 4th film "Ascendent". 5 stars from me.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020I really loved this movie. I know people say that generally the books are better and while that is mostly true for the first two installments in the series, I have to say that the movie in this case is much better than in the book version. I say that mainly because in the book version at the end Tris takes Caleb's place in stopping the Bureau from unleashing the Memory Serum, survives the Death Serum which is not shown in the movie and then is shot by David while unleashing the Memory Serum on the Bureau's leadership. Tris then dies from the bullet wound. I think that is very messed up. I mean how can build up a hero like Tris, have her go through so much pain and suffering, getting betrayed by the last of her family, watching her parents die right in front of her, saves her city multiple times and then what you just kill her and make her a martyr. That is what I hate about the book version and why I love the movie and say that it is much better than the book. I highly recommend this movie.

Good movie. It is good to see that the film-makers decided that Beatrice should be allowed to live at the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars sometimes for the better. This movie in particular
This whole series has taken a different path than the books did, sometimes for the better. This movie in particular, however, is so far off of the original that it could have just been a coincidence that the characters were named the same. It's a shame, really.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quando Ascendant??

4.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the wall
Third film in the 'Divergent' series, which adapts the popular young adult science fiction trilogy of novels.
This is not really a good jumping on point. But if you're reading this, then you're doubtless familiar with the books or the previous films, so that won't be a problem.
The film is an adaptation of 'Allegiant' the third novel in the series.
Picking up from where the second film left off, with major change coming to Chicago, it's a new era there under a new regime. Who will first deal with the remnants of the old. Tris, meantime, is desperate to find out what lies beyond the city wall. Her expedition out there finds a strange new world. And a whole new threat..
This covers the plot of the book. But with there being a fourth film still to come, let's just say that it doesn't end quite the way the book did. Prior to that, it's not desperately faithful to the novel. Taking the same ideas and setting and going it's own way with them. But, although purists may blanch, that really doesn't matter. Because as a movie, this really works well very well indeed.
It's fast paced. It's involving. It has good action sequences and strong moral dilemmas for the characters to face. The latter also gives the audience some good food for thought, as in addition to what is going on outside the city, those inside have dilemmas to face as well. Which leads you to consider what you would do in the same situation.
The leads are all well grown into their roles by now and carry the film effortlessly. Miles Teller does steal the show as Peter. Making an unsympathetic character compelling to watch. And the ending will leave you wanting to see what will happen next.
A good roller coaster ride of a movie. If you're prepared to give it a chance, then it's a good watch.
The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:
Languages: English.
Subtitles: English.
The first disc in this edition - the two disc limited edition. Remember those? - has a few trailers at the start, but those can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.
Extras on it are: a commentary from two of the producers.
Two featurettes: Allegiant: Book to film. This runs for five minutes and whilst brief, is an interesting look at how the adaptation was done.
Battle in the Bullfrog. This runs for three minutes and shows the making of a fight sequence. It's a good watch.
On the second disc there are four featurettes:
Into the fringe. Ten minutes about the production design of the world beyond the city.
The escape over the wall. Ten minutes about the filming of a key sequence early in the film.
Unlocking a new look. Seven minutes about the costume designs for the film.
Composing Allegiant. Four minutes about the writing of the score for the movie.
All are interesting and involving viewing, although the first two, by virtue of being ten minutes making them feel just the right length, are the best.
