Product Description

Twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man – Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – has ever walked in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), and aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, Petit and his gang overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension, and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Academy Award-winning director Robert Zemeckis uses advanced technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. THE WALK is a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the Towers of the World Trade Center.

A Perfect Film For 3D, And An Exhilarating Must-See Story
5 out of 5 stars
A Perfect Film For 3D, And An Exhilarating Must-See Story
From the moment I saw the movie trailer in theaters, I knew I had to see 'The Walk', and in 3D, only 3D. And boy, did it not disappoint.— THE FILM —The story is about a Frenchman who becomes fascinated with tight-rope walking since he was a child. As he grew up he wanted to go bigger, bolder, and higher. His ultimate dream becomes wanting to tight-rope walk the (then) newly-built Twin Towers in New York City—his artistic statement to the world. The first two thirds of the movie sets up all the pieces that would come to make this happen, and the final third act pays off tremendously. Thinking and writing about this third act gives me goosebumps. There is about 20 spectacular minutes of *sustained* tension and suspense that will give you goosebumps and leave you on the edge of your seat wondering if you can handle anymore (like, I can't even). It makes you wonder if this man is incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid. History would come to know it as the "artistic crime of the century".— 3D —The Walk was shot in 2D that went through a near-flawless 3D conversion. Even though it was shot in 2D it's necessary to watch this only in 3D (if you can), because it was *designed* for 3D viewing. The high-wire walking makes for a perfect 3D translation. You don't get gimmicky shots; all the shots were planned out from the start. The telling of the story and the camera movements have taken 3D into mind, and the use of depth is dazzling, with the occasional object hurtling at the screen that'll actually make you duck a few times. Seeing it on the small screen (55" for me) is not as vertigo-inducing as one might think. A bad 3D movie conversion can leave you feeling nauseated. I can honestly say I was expecting some dizziness, but I got none, I just had a fun time.— CINEMATOGRAPHY —When you watch a Robert Zemekis film, you will get impeccable cinematography. Compositions are gorgeous, shots are creative. Technically, they are perfection. My issue is, it's *too* perfect a lot of the times, especially the perfect and impossible shots; it partially detracts from the movie. I appreciate all the technicality that goes into these shots, but at the same time, they also take you a little bit out of the movie. Sometimes you can be too perfect, is what I'm saying. This is a great film, with a very likeable main character, presented in 3D for your viewing experience—and it is an experience. Recommended!*** NOTE ***If you suffer from vertigo then you maaaay not want to watch this in 3D, or even 2D.

Truly an amazing film. It feels like you are up there with him. Not for people with a fear of heights.
  • Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2020
I'll start this review with a fun fact-

The story this is based off of a true story that happened in the 1970s. I'm not sure why I assumed it was more recent than that, but moving on.

Given I know little about the actual story this is based off of my review is about how good the movie is as opposed to how historically accurate it is.

I realize I am bias in saying this because JGL is one of my favorites actors, however, the word that comes to mind in describing his performance in this film is unprecedented. I have always described his style as "ambitious, but tinkering on the edge of naivety," and this role encompasses EXACTLY that.
It's hard not to root for him when be is most confident whilst sympathizing with people that think his goal is too ambitious, and not to mention dangerous.

The concept alone may be enough to draw viewers in, but there's a certain amount of authenticity this film that is easily appreciated; the main characters are introduced in a way that is natural and believable. The pace of this film considering what will be the OBVIOUS climax is perfect and let's the viewers "in" on the process of preparing for it. It isn't rushed or dragged out - it's just right.

My favorite thing about this movie is the incredible character development that is embodied by Levitt's performance. We see a person that is acting arrogant and insisting that the effort needed to complete wire walking is his alone ("Why should I thank my audience? I'm the one walking the wire") transform in to an individual that completely understands what the phrase "team effort" effectively means ("It is because of you all I was able to walk the wire...")

The film score was also one of the greater strengths here, and it goes without saying that the set design was absolutely remarkable. You will mutter "oh my god" a million times under your breath because of how much you may become convinced that you are seeing EXACTLY what Levitt is facing below him during his 'Walk'.

    Watch this movie now!!!
    You won't regret it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Taken at face value it's a highly entertaining story. But after viewing this I became very curious about this story and started doing a bit of research. I simply couldn't believe that some of the events that this movie portrayed actually occurred. The 2008 documentary "Man On Wire" tells this story through personal accounts of the people involved, including the wire walker himself, Philippe Petit. To my amazement most of the scenes in "The Walk" actually happened in real life. After finding this out I developed an ever greater appreciation for this film, it didn't take as much creative license as I thought it did. If you enjoy this film I strongly urge you to watch "Man On Wire", it's a terrific documentary about this fascinating achievement.

Joseph Gordon Levitt did a terrific job as the completely obsessed Philippe Petit, he simply had to walk between these towers. The rest of the cast did an admirable job as well. But for me the star of this film was the imagery of the twin towers. It's as if they were still standing there and were filmed in HD. Many people say that seeing this in 3D was an incredible experience and I can completely see why. Even the way I saw it without 3D it was stunning and actually an emotional experience. While those towers were on screen, they were for that brief amount of time, real. Congratulations to those that did the visual effects for this film because they are truly spectacular and a wonderful tribute to the memory of these American landmarks.

In summary this movie is part comedy, part caper, and part deadly serious when the finale arrives at 110 stories in the sky. I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it without reservation.

I liked this film. I am a Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan, so I was probably going to, but this film is genuinely entertaining apart from the charms of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. When he takes off across that wire, it is stomach lurching, and exciting. It is totally believable and great fun!! I will say, his french accent was only somewhat convincing. And, by the way, VOILA is pronounced VWAH-LAH. Not WAH-LAH. A pretty basic thing, actually. But no matter, the acting was predictably good on JG-L's part and the rest of the ensemble as well. The plot was captivating. The result of solid acting, great CGI, and an engrossing plot was an energizing and uplifting experience. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bella storia vera!
Reviewed in Italy on November 1, 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars Une 3D qui fait tout son effet
Reviewed in France on April 10, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein 3D Must-See - Nichts für Leute mit Höhenangst
Reviewed in Germany on February 26, 2016
