Product Description

Based on the novel by Andrew Wellman, S.F.W. stars Stephen Dorf (Somewhere) as Cliff Spab, the disaffected youth taken hostage by the terrorist group known as S.P.L.T. Image. After 36 days in captivity as a stand-off between the hostage takers and the police drags on, Cliff's indifference to the situation and his possible death brings national focus to his catch phrase "So F _ _ _ing What?" Along with his fellow hostages, best friend Joe (Jack Noseworthy, Event Horizon) and Wendy (Reese Witherspoon, Wild), Cliff becomes a media darling daring to stare down the hostage takers with three words. S.F.W. is a shrewd and entertaining exploration of societal complacency, the glare of the media spotlight and the exploitation of notoriety for personal gain.

..And it was made in the early '90s.
They got much mileage on a lower budget film. For every cheesy line, there are two wonderfully delivered ones.
The subject of the movie, the media sensationalized surviving "hero" of a terrorist hostage situation, is attempting to reintegrate back into society after months of captivity. Yet the hyper media mauling and resultant fame becomes the main focus of the movie. An even more relevant topic than it was in the '90s. Excellent movie despite the occasionally awkward quick-take line.

There are familiar faces playing the parts and, for the most part, they do a good job of portraying their characters. More so than the budget allowed, I'm sure.

Bonus: the soundtrack is superb! Excellent alt-90s rock of the period, along with some earlier extras. Even some Gwar music video cameo. A bit alt of the alt songwise.

We had a cult movie section at our local Tower Records back in the day and this was one of the movies we boosted. I was thinking of it lately since everything in the US is so tumultuous right now. No one is getting along, we're ass-deep in a pandemic that too many people think is a hoax. Our soon to be ex-President has enabled a depressingly large subset of society to let their worst flags fly, and we're shockingly split as a nation.
    SPOILER!!!
    !!!
    !!!
    !!!
    !!!
I remember the gist of the movie was how the main character accidentally started a trend and a catch phrase of So F--ing What. And at the end some girl shoots him while screaming "Everything Matters!" and then THAT replaced his nihilism and people started caring again.
Aside from the commentary about how pop culture is easily swayed to contradict itself, I really just needed to see that pivotal scene, because I'm hoping we get to that "Everything Matters!!!" part of America soon. I know we're fighting the good fight, working towards a more fair and equitable future for everyone, but sometimes when reading the news it's easy to slouch and say, "Eff it." (does Amazon censor swear words? I'll err on the side of safety).
Anyhoo, the movie was prime 90s indy cinema and while it was a bit cheesy in some bits (Jake Busey went a little too hard), I got what I needed from the movie. It didn't disappoint.

The only thing this movie has going for it is the cast.
Many of our favorite actors and actresses together on one film.
If there is a plot in there somewhere, it was poorly executed.
I kept watching, hoping something worth my time would happen and at the end it came. Thank you Babs.

This film was unreal. It really captured the whole essence of media well.
The person below me fails to realise that this film has many characures. Most of them aren't supposed to make sense. And if you look at how he acted in the hostage situation you are missing the point.
He isn't supposed to be a hero. He did nothing heroic of any sort.
    >>what is the deal with the guys smashing the room up for no >>reason
They are doing it for no reason, for gratification. That is the point, they don't care about the conseqences. He just got out of a hostage room and he wanted to go crazy. My friends have often talked about smashing TV's (ala 'Fight for your right to party' filmclip) and how cool it would be. It's the same thing.
    >>then stephen dorf is completely sober in the next scene?
    Ummm, he never was drunk.
    >>why does jake busey pull a gun out so fast?
Okay you got me. I could never figure out why they were good friends with him, he didnt seem like a good guy at all.
    >>what is the deal with the mayor? he woulda killed dorf for making a fool out of him.
Oh yeah, killed him in front of hundreds of people. What do you mean by that exactly? He wouldnt have wanted to draw any extra attention to himself.
Don't take the story or the charcters too seriously. The message is what this film is about, once you understand that you can then see why the story and acting is what it is, to make this come accross. The story is about the Media, America's obsession with celebrities and most importantly, the way that Cliff Spab doesn't have a love of his life, so he is free to enjoy it, and live it.
Every scene and everything has a purpose. And as far as Dorff swearing too much that is ridiculous. First of all they dont swear as much as in Clerks. Second in private its not that bad, in public in front of the people he swears just as much, which is maybe what you are talking about. But that is the point, he doesn't care.
And he swears a lot in the flashback scenes. I would be too if I had a camera and a gun pointed at me for 36 days.

It's begining to show it's age, but this satrical drama remains a topical dissection of the American facination with the cult of the non-celebrity. Stephen Dorff is the angry young man who is amoung a group taken hostage by camcorder-weilding anarchists. They force the networks to broadcast their tapes, but it's the rebellious Dorff who soon becomes the star attraction. Dorff is suitably surly as the man fighting against his 15 minutes of fame and there's good suppourting work from a pre-fame Reese Witherspoon and Jake Busey. Director Jefery Levy demonstrates a sympathetic understanding of ninties teenage alienation. Overall and interesting and enthralling movie that is well worth watching.

This film is fantastic, i am disappointed that i am no longer able to purchase it.
Although this film is impossible to sum up in words, and if i tried i might spoil your viewing pleasure.
This film is fantastic, you will not get sick of watching it over and over again. I think that people aged 16 to 24 will find it most enjoyable, however parents with teenage children will probably find it useful.
Since i cant recommend that you buy it, as it is unavailable i recommend that you hire it out at your local video score

This is a great film about a convenience store hostage situation that is broadcast nationally,
making some of the hostages national hero's. SFW focuses on the chaos that ensues when you
give fame and fortune to disaffected youth who not only don't really care, but don't even want it
(Hence the title which will become clear when you watch the film). Steven Dorff and Reese
Witherspoon are perfect in the lead roles, allowing young people or those who were once young
to identify with the situations. (Tobey Maguire of Spiderman also appears in an early cameo as a stoned teenager)
