Product Description

From Guy Hamilton, the acclaimed director of The Devil’s Disciple, Goldfinger, Funeral in Berlin, Force 10 from Navarone, The Mirror Crack’d and Evil Under the Sun, comes this classic murder mystery starring the great Alastair Sim (A Christmas Carol) as the enigmatic Inspector Poole. The Birling family are rich, pampered and complacent. It is 1912 and the shadow of the impending war has yet to fall across their lives. As they sit down for dinner one night, celebrating the engagement of the eldest child, Sheila (Eileen Moore), to prosperous businessman Gerald (Brian Worth), a knock at the door announces the arrival of a visitor who changes their lives forever. Based on the classic stage play by J.B. Priestley (The Old Dark House), An Inspector Calls is a compelling critique of the moral hypocrisy of upper-crust English society, beautifully photographed by Edward Scaife (The Captain’s Paradise) and co-starring actor/writer/producer/director Bryan Forbes (Quatermass 2).

Special Features:
-NEW Audio Commentary by Film Historian David Del Valle
-Interview with Actress Jane Wenham
-Optional English Subtitles
-Dual-Layered BD50 Disc

If you’re a fan of black and white movies, British productions, and absolute excellent acting this movie fits the bill. It is a slow moving film based on that excellent acting and meaningful moving dialogue. If all of those things make you yawn – skip this one. If you like being mesmerized by skill in all of the departments of movie making this will do it for you💕

When I started watching this, I was expecting a British "who done it". This film is a bit like that but much, much different. I'm reluctant to say too much about the movie without giving everything away. I can tell you this much, the movie is really not so much about crime, but rather how the powerful can be so cruel to the weak.

This movie was made in 1954, the producer was a socialist and this movie in a very subtle way may have been advocating socialism. Of course today we realize that capitalism has done more to raise the standard of living than any other economic system. However, capitalism MUST have compassion, and a certain degree of regulation. Don't get me wrong, this movie is NOT political. But rather, it is moral.

I've watched this terrific film with people who are politically to the Left, and to the Right. Everyone agreed the movie contains a very powerful message. In this case, the message is subtle, but unmistakable. I cannot recommend this movie enough. I also recommend that you watch this movie on Blu-ray (KL Studio Classics). For some reason, the streaming version is about six minutes shorter. Also, the Blu-ray contains many extras. I'm very happy to have this terrific movie in my 3000 DVD/Blu-ray collection.

Sadly, comments to reviews are no longer allowed. I miss reading them.

I really liked this movie. Even though it it is black and white and the 1954 version, this is an excellent film with great acting, particularly Alistair Sim as the inspector. The plot is really good, and the ending is one of the best surpise endings I have experienced. A recent modern version has been filmed but the DVD is unfortunately not available for US devices. A streaming version can be viewed in the US.

This is a good movie, but the more recent one staring David Thewlis is much better.

I don't quite see why everyone raves about Alistair Sims, for I found his acting in this one rather non-plus. Also, the black and white filming (there were many other color films in 1954), subtracts from the experience. I found the acting of the drunken son particularly bad. Mother was OK, daughter OK, future son-in-law a bit better.

An interesting story from a play that shows England in the 50s with its class structure at its worst.Alastair Sim stars in an unusual role for him. The blu ray video is outstanding and the commentary track full of information. Great value.

I've been a film junkie for four decades; in fact, I've got a film degree. I've seen lots and lots of films written by ardent Leftists, and many of them skirt the edges of propaganda. But this thing is just unbelievable. It's an accomplishment to be worse than Lillian Hellman's The North Star. I'm a huge fan of Alistair Sim, and always wanted to see it. Somehow, An Inspector Calls ends up quite often on "Best of" mystery film lists. How is beyond me. No surprise it debuted in Moscow.

Priestly, author of the play, who was a prominent British Socialist, has the industrial upper-class, aspiring to the aristocracy, in his gunsights. The family at the dinner table in 1912 when the story opens seems nice enough, though perhaps a bit troubled, but of course, he's going to strip away the gauze to reveal the monsters beneath. He's so intent on doing so that the story is sacrificed to the crucifixion of each cardboard character. Based on my read of all the blurbs, I doubt it's a spoiler to say that, once the Inspector arrives with news of the poor factory girl's death, each member of the family is exposed as having had a part in her destruction. This clunky premise unfolds with one plot absurdity after another, until you're just rolling your eyes over each improbable revelation. Apparently, Priestly bragged that he wrote the entire play in less than a week. It shows. This is no clever mystery, but only tired agitprop. If you want a great mystery, rent the original Sleuth.

    古い映画ですが、画像も音もよく、英語字幕を見ながら英語の勉強にもなります。監督の独特の解釈(超自然的な人物として描かれた警部が登場人物一人一人の罪を鋭く暴いていく姿)が印象的でした。
