Wild Style follows the exploits of maverick tagger Zoro, whose work attracts the attention of an East Village art fancier who commissions him to paint the stage for a giant Rapper's Convention. A document of the earliest days of hip-hop in the boroughs of New York, everything in Wild Style is authentic - the story, style, characters, and most of the actors, are drawn from the community. It features a pantheon of old-school pioneers, including Grandmaster Flash, Busy Bee, The Cold Crush Brothers and more.

Note: Some may find our recent interview with Arrow's James White tied to
Wild Style to be of interest, as James goes into some detail about various aspects of this release and his own love for the film.
Wild Style is often described as the film that helped introduce hip hop to the masses, and there's maybe an inherent irony in the very
term
"hip hop" which may tend to suggest music almost automatically. One of the kind of interesting things about Wild Style is how the film
actually celebrates
what might be called "tagging culture" and/or graffiti art as well as perhaps slightly more music related breakdancing at least as much as the
incredible soundtrack the film offers.
But in a way that's the very point, if it might seem like at least part of the point may have been lost due to the vagaries of time, since
Wild Style actually prominently features a veritable intersection of arts, including music, dance, and, yes, visual art, especially as
evidenced by graffiti, all part of a burgeoning hip-hop scene in New York in the 1980s. If "shorthand" has designated hip hop as a music genre,
Wild Style makes it abundantly clear that the early years of the movement were in every way a multimedia extravaganza. The film has a
semi-
documentarian air, at least at times, with
performances by a glut of early hip hop stars, and features a lead performance by Lee Quiñones, whose graffiti art is prominently featured.
Quiñones
plays a character who adopts the slightly misspelled pseudonym of Zoro, and in fact his introduction in the film is of him spray painting the
venerable
Johnston McCully character on the side of a train.

Note: While this is a standalone 4K release without a 1080 disc, I am offering screenshots from Arrow's standalone 1080 release of Wild Style as I think it actually provides a better representation
of the look of the palette in particular, rather than offering screenshots from the 4K disc which are by necessity downscaled to 1080 and in SDR.
Because this release does not include a 1080 disc of the feature (the included 1080 disc is bonus features only), the 2K video score above has been
intentionally left blank.
Wild Style is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Arrow Video with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 1.33:1. Arrow provides the
same
insert booklet for its standalone 4K and 1080 releases which includes the following information on the presentation:
Wild Style has been exclusively restored by Arrow Films and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1 with mono audio. This presentation is sure to be a near revelation for anyone who may remember the ancient VHS from Rhino or the later DVD. While the above verbiage alludes to some slight variations that are on display, they are very slight, if arguably a bit more observable at the higher resolution this format offers along with the HDR / Dolby Vision grades. That said, this 4K UHD presentation is commendably organic looking, with an understandably heavy grain field that still is generally quite tightly resolved, even in some of the darkest moments. The grain field only seems to accentuate the gritty urban environments that are so often on display throughout the film. Detail levels on the frequent close-ups of faces in particular tends to be excellent. Some of the performance material, notably the red tinged vignettes, have some appreciable highlights in the HDR grades which are a bit more subliminal in the 1080 SDR presentation. That said, I wouldn't argue that the HDR grades significantly enhance sometimes iffy shadow detail in the darkest outside scenes.
The film is presented in 4K resolution in HDR10 and Dolby Vision. On the Blu-ray edition, the film is presented in high definition.
The original 16mm AB camera negative was scanned in 4K 16 bit at Metropolitan Post, New York.
The film was restored in 4K resolution and color graded at Resillion, New York.
The 16mm AB negative had been affected over time by color fading and density fluctuation, resulting in occasional image flickering and intermittent color breathing throughout. Extensive efforts were made by the restoration team to repair or reduce these instances as much as possible.
The optical mono soundtrack negative was transferred and restored at Deluxe Audio Services, Los Angeles.
All materials sourced for the project were made available by Director Charlie Ahearn.

Wild Style features a propulsive LPCM Mono track that offers an appealingly energetic account of the music and the ubiquitous urban background sounds that dot the many outdoor scenes. There's some arguable slight thinness that can be discerned in some of the passing ambient environmental effects in particular, as well as occasionally in some of the performance material, but the punchline in that regard may be that a lot of the music tends to be "thump heavy" low end centered. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English subtitles are available.

The quasi-documentary side of Wild Style may be more viscerally compelling than any perceived "story" the film wants to tell, and a certain slack needs to be granted non professional actors, but the sheer onslaught of incredible music, art and dance offered in this film is like the Golden Age of the Metro Goldwyn Mayer musical epic reimagined through the hardscrabble perspective of urban survivors. As the above linked interview with James White probably makes clear, this was obviously a labor of love for all involved, and that love pervades the solid technical presentation and amazing array of supplements. Highly recommended.
