Whitesnake: Forevermore Blu-ray Movie Review

Whitesnake has had been rather well served by the folks at Rhino with a number of Blu-ray releases, including Whitesnake: The Purple Album, Whitesnake: Still Good to Be Bad, Whitesnake Greatest Hits and Whitesnake: The Purple Tour (Whitesnake: Made in Japan was evidently released by Frontiers Records on Blu-ray many years ago as well). Rather interestingly in that regard, and especially vis a vis Rhino's tradition of offering new hi res audio mixes on audio Blu-rays, all of the Whitesnake releases from Rhino that I've personally reviewed have been what might be called CD-centric, with the music being presented on that kind of disc, and with the Blu-ray being utilized for music videos and the like. That's once again the case here.

This another hybrid media release where one fan's "major feature" may be another fan's "bonus content", so I'll simply use this part of the review to document the contents of the Blu-ray disc in this set.

Whitesnake: Forevermore Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Whitesnake: Forevermore is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Rhino, all AVC encoded but variously in 1080p or 1080i (mostly 1080i in this particular instance), in 1.78:1. None of this material is probably going to set videophiles' hearts on fire, but the music videos in particular look nicely sharp and well detailed, even if as I mentioned with regard to the videos included on Whitesnake: The Purple Album, they expectedly offer any number of visual "bells and whistles" that can add all sorts of psychedelic touches to the image. The live videos are a somewhat more variant bunch much as with Whitesnake: The Purple Album, but I'd argue offer more consistent clarity and sharpness than some of the live material on the previously released package.

Whitesnake: Forevermore Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

The lack of a hi-res audio Blu-ray will probably be one point of contention for some fans with this release, but as with The Purple Album, the music videos offer only Dolby Digital 2.0 audio, something that's also the only option on all of the other material save for the live Japanese concert, which offers LPCM 5.1 audio in addition to the Dolby Digital 2.0 option. The surround track certainly audibly opens up the arena ambience of the concert, with crowd noises spilling out of the side and rear channels regularly. That very spaciousness may actually disperse the actual band sound a bit, but fidelity is still great and the overall mix is quite appealing (I often feel like vocals tend to suffer in some live concert outings, but things are nicely prioritized for the most part here). I'm scoring the overall package at 3.5 due to the abundance of lossy audio, but the Japanese concert will probably be the standout for audiophiles.

The box holds the four CDs and Blu-ray disc all in just slightly oversized "mini LP" jackets. A really gorgeous hardback book offers a ton of content, including an interview with David Coverdale. A foldout poster and smaller insert booklet with even more content are also included.

Whitesnake: Forevermore Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

About the only complaint Whitesnake fans may have with this release is that there's no hi-res audio Blu-ray included, but considering how Rhino has been churning out audio Blu-rays, maybe Whitesnake's discography will ultimately be given that treatment. In the meantime, this is another really enjoyable package with a glut of CD material and some fun music videos and live performances on the Blu-ray. The non disc swag, especially the hardback book, should easily delight fans. Recommended.
