The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman April 15, 2026

“This move has gone completely off the rails” says a “Paramount exec” halfway through The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, a wildly frantic and frenetic fourth installment in the SpongeBob feature film family. But that's what makes the franchise so fabulous in so many eyes. This movie is completely off the wall, not at all serious, and irreverent in so many ways. It's the animated equivalent of an overly stimulated bodybuilder who is practically bouncing off the walls in the gym and unable to contain the elevated highs and endless movements at the peak of the stimulus. Add to that the vividly colorful palette and wildly expressive dialogue, and this is easily just about the year's most dynamically whacky film. It's all in good fun, so don't expect all of the dazzle and delight to be matched with a grounded story with redeeming themes; this one is all about spectacle, pace, and energy and less about lasting emotional impact or even momentary mental engagement.

The film's plot serves as little more than a catalyst for the zany (mis)adventures of Spongebob and friends, but the nuts and bolts of it go something like this: Spongebob (voiced by Tom Kenny) has grown tall enough to ride a ride he's always wanted to ride. But there's still one problem: he's too afraid of actually doing it (as an aside I've been reading the "Ready, Freddy!" books with my son, and this end of the plot would fit right into that fictional universe). But when he discovers that Mr. Krabs (voiced by Clancy Brown) earned his bravery chops as a swashbuckling pirate in days gone by, SpongeBob determines to do the same. Enter The Flying Dutchman (voiced by Mark Hamill) who invites Spongebob to sail through the Underworld with him and earn his bravery card. But little does Spongebob know that the nefarious pirate has other plans for his new yellow, spongy friend.

Make no mistake about it: The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants is not art house cinema, nor does it aim for anything even remotely in that ballpark. This is as mindlessly vapid as they come, but in this case that's delivering exactly what audiences expect of a Spongebob movie. It's as whacky as it is witty, as colorful as it is creative, and as noisy as it is nonsensical. And somehow, it all comes together and just works. At least, it works within its established franchise rhythms and contexts. Something this insane would probably not work nearly as well just coming out of the blue, but with the long-established characters, tones, wit, and writing style, what is otherwise chaotically disjointed on the surface actually comes together into a harmonious 80-something-minute extravaganza of all the things that make Spongebob unique and a long-established fan-favorite franchise. The movie really just delivers what is expected of it, then. There's no reinventing of the wheel or even much of a turn of the wheel; the film simply blazes forward with what has worked in the past and continues to work now. It's not everyone's cup of tea (that goes for me) but I can at least appreciate that the film is true to its franchise and quite the spectacle in all its ways.

And if one word could really get to the heart of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants' aesthetics, that word would probably be "spectacle." This is a ridiculously colorful film that matches the splash with quite a few interesting artistic turns and even, in true Spongebob movie fashion, live action elements mixed in. It's animated in a very familiar way but at the same time it's bold in some of its choices and creative in how it achieves those choices. Even if the mayhem is too much, this is a film worth watching for its oftentimes striking visual style. Add top-notch voice work -- the core has been together for decades and a few newcomers, including the venerable Mark Hamill, do first-rate work in the movie -- and a killer soundtrack, and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants has everything fans could possibly want from it.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

I can't comment very much on The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants beyond stating the obvious: the movie looks fantastic on Blu-ray. This is one of the most precise, potent, and practically perfect pictures on the market. The color is nearly otherworldly. Everything is super bright, super intense, super vivid, super everything. There's never a shot or element in the film that fans might say "I wish that had a bit more color splash to it." This is a reference worthy Blu-ray to show off any display's color credentials. Overall clarity is first-rate, too. Just as good, there's not a thing amiss in the clarity and crispness of the animated content, and the various live action elements capture every detail with faultless excellence. What else is there to say? Sure, I would have loved to see a UHD just to see the material pushed harder, but I can't imagine any videophile walking away from this anything less than blown away with what Paramount has accomplished with this one.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

Paramount gives audiences the best for The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, delivering the movie to Blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The presentation is exceptional, featuring extreme output throughout the full range of the listening experience, covering every square inch of the listening area with sonic bliss. The presentation not only fills the room, it fills it with perfectly clear and robust elements which are placed well, move well, and hold to precise definition and pinpoint detail, regardless of whether the sound is front-and-center or just lingering in the background. The track gets off to a great start in the opening minutes on board the pirate ship, with all of its splashy and creaky moves. This sort of precision is common, and when the action picks up, these qualities hold, just with more robustness and vigor. Speaking of, the subwoofer is engaged with exceptional depth and power. Musical elements play with unparalleled accuracy and richness across the front with a solid and seamless surround integration. Dialogue is clear, centered, and perfectly prioritized from start to finish, even in the most sonically intense and involved scenes.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.5 of 5

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants' Blu-ray release includes four short-ish supplements and a music video. A DVD copy of the film and a digital copy voucher are included with purchase.

  • The Spongebob Ensemble: The Veteran Voices (1080p, 5:33): A fun look at the bond shared between the main voice actors who have been working together for a quarter-century.
  • The Spongebob Ensemble: The New Crew (1080p, 5:17): Unlike the previous piece, which looked at longtime franchise staples, this extra explores the voice work contributed by newcomers to the franchise.
  • The Flying Dutchman: Animated Artistry and Live Acting (1080p, 5:57): Exploring how a familiar franchise character is exposed and utilized in a new way in this movie. It also looks at Mark Hamill's voice work and live-action work in the film.
  • From Bikini Bottom to the Underworld (1080p, 4:38): Exploring the film's aesthetics, the new underworld location introduced in the film, and more.
  • Music Video: (1080p, 2:40): "Big Guy" by Ice Spice.

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants hits on all cylinders, and that's going to delight fans but perhaps make relative newcomers to the franchise wonder where the appeal is to be found. The movie is everything fans would want it to be, which makes it a successful venture. Paramount's Blu-ray delivers exceptional video and audio presentations and a handful of extras. Recommended to fans!
