Supervixens Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman January 20, 2025 Note: Severin Films is releasing a trio of Russ Meyer efforts in both 4K UHD and 1080 formats, for a total of six releases (the 4K UHD
packages come with a 1080 disc):
Vixen 4K, Vixen,
Supervixens 4K,
Supervixens, Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens 4K and Beneath the Valley of the Ultra-Vixens
. Severin's website has a number of other offerings, some fairly pricey, which may be of interest to, um, hardcore Russ Meyer fans, including
items advertised as having come from the Russ Meyer Estate (the back cover of this release offers a slightly different formulation by mentioning
The Russ Meyer Trust). The entire collection has been branded with a Russ Meyer's Bosomania
imprimatur, which I for one
really wish had come with a ™ symbol.
A pull quote on the back cover of this release claims Supervixens is "Russ Meyer at his outrageous best", and while that may be true in
one way, Meyer's return to the pulchritudinous content that made him famous may simply be, as the very log line for this film attests, "too much
for one movie". Fans of Meyer know that he had a brief flirtation with ostensible "mainstream" movie making with first Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and then probably even more so
with The Seven Minutes, the latter of which somehow managed to
take a controversial and at least semi titillating novel and turn it into a snoozefest. As if to atone for those "errors", though, Meyer pretty much
just turns everything "up to 11" with this enterprise, as evidenced not just by the Super in the film's title, but the fact that no doubt
intentionally hilariously all of the
female characters have first names beginning with Super, for absolutely no discernable reason whatsoever.

If Vixen offered a focal female character who is sexually insatiable, also kind of hilariously this film more or less gives the "flip side" of that equation by offering a male character who is supposedly catnip to the women. Clint Ramsey (Charles Pitts) is married to the, well, sexually insatiable SuperAngel (Shari Eubank), a character whose repeated put downs of at least two males who cross her path are somewhat reminiscent of probably more problematic and racially charged epithets uttered by Vixen Palmer toward the black character of Niles in the earlier film. Suffice it to say that first Clint himself and then local cop Harry Sledge (Charles Napier) invite SuperAngel's umbrage when they're not, um, up to snuff in the lovemaking department. The unhinged Sledge ends up killing SuperAngel (not as much of a spoiler as you might think, considering how gonzo the storyline becomes), and of course attempts to frame Clint for the crime. Clint's attempts to evade capture repeatedly find him being accosted by various incredibly curvaceous females who find him irresistible. What's an assumed Fugitive to do?
Suffice it to say that after having gotten at least groped and quite often more than that by various females entering the fray, Clint finds himself at a roadside gas station called Supervixen's Oasis, where its eponymous owner seems to be SuperAngel, back with a new and ostensibly improved second half of her first name. It's all daffy as hell without even a passing attempt at making sense of anything, capped only by a truly ludicrous (if undeniably hilarious) climax that redefines how a damsel can be in distress.
Supervixens Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality

Supervixens is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Severin Films with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. A prefatory text card before the main feature offers this information:
This 4K restoration was produced by Severin Films, on behalf of Severin Films and RM Films International. The back cover of this release also touts that this film, like Vixen, is being offering in high definition for the first time courtesy of this release. While I'll cut to the chase and suggest those with the proper setups to opt for Severin's 4K UHD release (which contains this 1080 disc), this is another fantastic looking presentation that suggests either an extremely well curated negative or stellar restoration efforts. As with Vixen, and maybe arguably even more so, the palette pops beautifully throughout in the many outdoor scenes. While detail levels are commendable throughout the presentation, things in these outdoor scenes are especially notable for fine detail levels on everything from naked flesh (there's a lot of that) to actual costumes. Reds and blues are unbelievably vivid throughout large swaths of the film. Even some midrange framings, as in the crazy climax sequence, can also see some rather nice general detail levels. There are some very minor nicks and blemishes that have made it through the restoration process, but on the whole things are in commendable condition. Grain is tightly resolved throughout.
The film was scanned from the 35mm original camera negative at Illuminate Studios Hollywood, with color and restoration work by Severin Films.
The audio was sourced from the 35mm original track negative.
Supervixens Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality

Supervixens offers a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track, and while it's not especially ambitious and probably can't offer the same audio equivalent to the really surprisingly strong video presentation, there's nothing to cause any worry or concern here. Occasional scoring sounds secure and has a decent if not overwhelming midrange and low end, and dialogue (such as it is) is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout, without any problems whatsoever. Optional English subtitles are available.

- TV Spot (HD; 00:33)
Supervixens Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

Supervixens has the same sly winking quality that a lot of Meyer efforts do, but this film can still seem forced and ends up jettisoning what modicum of narrative coherency it may have in its opening moments. Technical merits are solid and supplements are very enjoyable, and I can't imagine this release not being appreciated by Meyer aficionados.
