Shrek: 4-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker June 15, 2024

All four films from the beloved DreamWorks animated 'Shrek' franchise are available here, together for the first time on 4K UHD disc courtesy of Universal. Featuring an all-star voice vast led by Michael Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Princess Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) the films helped to raise the bar for computer-generated animated features. Fans of all ages will certainly wish to add this money and space-saving collection of timeless and magical tales to their collections. A slipcover and Digital Code are also included.

As of this release, it's been 14 years since the last installment of DreamWork's Shrek saga, and the fact that the animated ogre's popularity remains undiminished is a testament not only to the storytelling, but to the quality of the voice cast and the computer generated animation as well. The franchise has grossed an excess of $3 billion dollars and the series accounts for some of the best work that Mike Myers (Shrek) has put to film. The first film was based on William Steig’s children's book Shrek!, a short but simple tale about self-acceptance and the relative nature of beauty. Though the film has very little in common with the book, the plot was dramatically changed, innumerable characters were added, and the message was a bit different, Steig was reportedly a fan. At it's core though, the character of Shrek was relatively true to the source - he was a vulgar and repugnant creature who would normally be the villain of the story on a fairy-tale quest to find and, though it wasn't his original mission, (eventually) marry a princess.

Shrek: 4-Movie Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Is this four-film collection the last we'll see of Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and the rest of the fairy tale creatures? There are enough rumblings out there to suggest that a fifth installment may happen at some point, as well as a potential additional spin-ff or two. But since nothing has been confirmed yet, fans will need need to content themselves with this (finally!) complete Shrek: 4-Movie Collection 4K. While the third film does seem a bit darker in 4K than it does in it's 1080p transfer, the first, second, and fourth look fantastic, with admittedly modest gains on display in terms of color and detail, and the inclusion of the Blu-ray bonus disc from the first film's 4K release is more than welcome. Since the improvements found in the 4K transfers are not massive, those with an already complete set on Blu-ray may wish to proceed with caution, but for those who have yet to pick up the films, or for the devout 4K enthusiasts, Shrek: 4-Movie Collection 4K comes strongly recommended.
