Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 20, 2024

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is an exciting action-adventure series with plenty to offer early retirement enthusiasts. Created by FUNA, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement was originally broadcast between January 8th, 2023 and March 26th, 2023. The series was originally broadcast on TV Asahi, ABC, BS11, and AT-X.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement features theme song performances by Kaori Maeda (opening) and YABI×YABI (ending). Licensed by Crunchyroll for home media in North America, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement features animation production by Felix Film (Otherside Picnic, Hairpin Double). Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement features original character designs by Tōzai. The series features voice performances by Rika Nagae, Jun Fukuyama, Kaori Maeda, Rika Tachibana, Ruriko Aoki, and Yūji Kameyama.

Mitsuha Yamano (Rika Nagae) has a gift that few others possess. Mitsuha is able to transport herself between different worlds – teleporting back and forth between one world and another (in style). The gift is something that she loves.

The teleportation gift allows Mitsuha a rare chance to get rich and use her massive wealth to retire young. Who wouldn’t want to retire young and with endless wealth? Mitsuha still has some things to figure out in the meantime.

The market is something Mitsuha still needs to master. Mitsuha must also help to defend the city. Things aren’t going to be instantaneous, either. To top it all off, Mitsuha also must brave things alone. Orphaned as a high schooler and left with almost nothing to get by, Mitsuha must do what she can to survive. Can Mitsuha reach her goal of early retirement?

Mitsuha is a compelling lead character for the series. There are certainly some relatable qualities to the character. The orphan aspect of the character will be relatable to anyone who has ever lost a parent (or both parents). As someone with no living parent myself, I found this aspect of the character relatable. Mitsuha wants to succeed and have as much financial security as possible. It’s a relatable theme even within the cotton-candy ideation of the series concept.

The character designs by Yūki Fukuchi (Plunderer) are well-done. The designs certainly add to the series aesthetic goals. The character art adds to the series aesthetic. These elements make the series more well-rounded.

The animation is at the forefront of the series production values. The art is one of the best strengths of the series. The art direction and animation direction certainly help to bring out the best in the series aesthetic qualities. The team of animators involved with the production brought a lot to the table, providing the series with a good design aesthetic. The animation is crisp, colorful, and engaging.

Exploring the action-adventure series with a bold design, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is well-rounded in the animation arena. Rather than a bleak and dreary aesthetic with dark colors and a grim undertone, the series aims for sunnier shades of animation and the aesthetic quality certainly brings out the best in the cinematography. The animation makes a solid impression and this adds to the production value in spades – enhancing the entire spectrum of the animation and the visuals.

Written by Akihiko Inari (Digimon: Data Squad, Yu-Gi-Oh!), Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement has some fun for audiences seeking a nice action-adventure series. The dialogue is solid. A fun concept and the lead character is charming. Inari does a good job with focusing on the central protagonist and making the character a standout for the production.

Directed by Hiroshi Tamada (Glass Fleet, Sgt. Frog), Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is a solid series with a good concept and nice production values. The series is well worth checking out. Fans of action-adventure anime who enjoy a nice concept and a good protagonist will appreciate the solid directing by Tamada. Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is certainly going to please audiences looking for some rainy-day fun.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The series has bold looking animation and the aesthetic is well reproduced on the release. The colors "pop" off the screen with excellent clarity and detail. Depth is well handled, too. The series encoding is solid and capably handles the action-adventure elements. The background animation and line art make a good impression, too. The animation certainly shines on the release. This is especially noteworthy for the action and adventure aspects because the encoding allows for the video to look extremely pleasing and well-done without compression woes.

One of the best qualities of the Blu-ray disc format is the superior presentation quality. This has been a hallmark of the format before streaming services even existed. Even if the age of streaming video, the format continues to excel with rewarding audiences with a superior presentation. The video encoding provides higher video bit-rates compared to streaming services – making the format ideal for home theater enthusiasts who want to eek out every detail in the presentation. Streaming, by comparison, sometimes fluctuates in quality, too. Sometimes streaming dips in quality – even for a second – it can take someone out of the experience.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles) are the main audio selections on the release. The collection also includes a French Dolby TrueHD 2.0 audio option on the menu. Optional French subtitles are also provided. The English dub benefits somewhat by having a more robust surround sound audio option – expanding the soundstage with the rear channels allowing for more detail in the sound mix. The original Japanese language version will still be preferred by purists seeking the most authentic audio. The English subtitles are well done are free from egregious spelling or grammatical errors.

Blu-ray offers a significant and noteworthy advantage over streaming services. Blu-ray provides a higher quality resolution for audio presentations. The lossless audio encoding provides a more immersive and detailed experience. For audiophiles and home theater fans wanting the best possible sound quality, Blu-ray provides a major advantage to all streaming video services – none of which provide lossless audio quality. Streaming services only offer lossy (non-lossless) audio encoding.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  0.5 of 5

The Blu-ray release includes a nicely designed o-card slipcover that adds something extra special to the release. The slipcover features unique key artwork different from the artwork highlighted underneath the o-card slipcover. The additional artwork added emphasizes the animation and adds a nice design touch to the collection.

Collectors and slipcover enthusiasts will appreciate the extra art and getting double artwork certainly enhances the entire package. There is something wonderful about holding something beautiful and nice in your hands – a physical manifestation. Fans of the series will find this wonderful to add to their collection.

On disc extras include:

Textless Opening Song (HD, 1:32)

Textless Closing Song (HD, 1:32)

Unfortunately, the Blu-ray release doesn't have a more comprehensive supplemental package. The release could have used a more in-depth supplemental package with additional extras such as audio commentaries, making-of documentaries, cast/crew interviews, featurettes, photo galleries, roundtable discussions, convention panels, and more. Alas, the set only comes with a few standard supplements and these extras don't add much extra value to the package for collectors.

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement is a charming action-adventures series with a fun protagonist. The series concept will appeal to anyone looking to save their pennies for an early retirement. The Blu-ray release provides an excellent high-definition presentation and lossless audio encoding. The release comes with a nice collectable slipcover, too. The slipcover is available on the first print run. The only downside to the release is a lackluster supplemental package. The extras could have been better and more in-depth. Fans of the series wanting ownership and a superior presentation may still want to consider a purchase. Recommended.
