Two hapless drifters, Frank and Bruno, team up with Linde to recover her land and trek across 1870's Southern Arizona to find an elusive frontier musician. Quantum Cowboys Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf May 5, 2024

In the supplementary materials on the “Quantum Cowboys” Blu-ray, co-writer/director Geoff Marslett shares word with screening audiences that they will most likely be confused while watching the movie. The helmer is after big ideas with a small budget, heading into the Old West to explore the nature of the future and multiple realities, doing so through a blend of animation and live-action activity. The fact that it all makes sense to Marslett provides some comfort, with the viewing experience more interesting as a cinematic exercise, finding storytelling and philosophy not as compelling as the visual descent into unreality.

Frank (Kiowa Gordon) is a desperate man in 1873, looking to rob a store in Arizona Territory, collecting cash to fund a potential future with his friend, Bruno (John Way). The crime is stopped, but an accidental shooting occurs, killing singer Blacky (Howe Gelb). Three years later, Frank is released from prison, joining Bruno as they cross the desert to restart their lives. Instead of peace, Frank and Bruno are challenged by Colfax (David Arquette) and Depew (Frank Mosley), two time travelers up to no good. Helping Frank and Bruno find their way is Linde (Lily Gladstone), who’s looking to retrieve land owed to her, requiring some assistance of her own.

“Quantum Cowboys” doesn’t remain fixated on plot for very long, with Marslett preferring to wind his way through different perspectives and realities, using a crime story to kick things off. The feature is more invested in characters, working with western tradition to detail the dangers and strangers of the Old West (John Doe portrays three saloon personalities), sending Bruno and Frank into a few dangerous encounters. Depew and Colfax are positioned as villains, but they spend most of their time trading thoughts on the universe. Linde is refreshingly grounded, keeping “Quantum Cowboys” passably engaging as viewers learn more about her quest to reclaim land, joining Frank and Bruno across dangerous terrain.

Costuming offers strong browns and blacks. Live-action elements deliver natural skin tones. Detail secures some skin particulars and fibrous outfits. Artistic efforts are also clearly defined. Delineation is satisfactory. Compression mostly holds together, but mild banding is detected at times.

Quantum Cowboys Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

"Quantum Cowboys" is lovingly made by Marslett, who turns to animation to break free of reality, helping to create a lively visual presence for the picture as the writing dives into deep thoughts on the universe and beyond. It's not the most rousing offering of drama, but performances are generally capable and the imagination of it all is something to see.
