The Pet Shop Boys perform hit songs like West End Girls, Suburbia, Opportunities, and It's a Sin live in concert in Copenhagen during their Dreamworld tour. The lavish concert film features many of their classic tracks.

It's rarely if ever I see a music related Blu-ray make it toward the top of my review queue (based on a super secret algorithm known only to Al and Tipper Gore and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and that is a very deep cut from Saturday Night Live). But this engaging new release from Rhino, offering a live performance by the Pet Shop Boys of their greatest hits at the Royal Arena Copenhagen, has accomplished that very feat, meaning this may be an unusually alluring release for many who don't normally consider purchasing a live performance Blu-ray like this. The Pet Shop Boys have been relatively decently served in terms of Blu-ray releases, with, in fact, Rhino's Pet Shop Boys: Smash - The Singles 1985-2020 offering the original (kind of quaint now to contemporary eyes) music videos that accompanied at least some of the tunes offered on this particular disc. Maybe a little interestingly, though, actual standalone audio Blu-rays by the Pet Shop Boys seem to be limited solely to Pet Shop Boys: Nonetheless as of the writing of this review.

Pet Shop Boys: Dreamworld is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Parlophone and Rhino Music with an AVC encoded 1080i transfer in 2.00:1. This was evidently captured in 4K (which might then beg the question as to why a 4K UHD version wasn't released), though I don't have any authoritative information on cameras utilized. This is an appealing presentation with some very nice detail levels on at least the band members if not always some of the somewhat pixellated looking projections upstage from them. Some of the more baroque designs behind the band can show signs of aliasing. Other combing artifacts can accrue around some fast movements like drumsticks. But the oddest thing about this presentation is some curious interstitial noisiness that can be easily spotted at times. I thought for a while that maybe just one camera was having an issue, but noise can show up from a variety of angles and perspectives, and kind of weirdly at times completely divorced from changing light values and the like. It's a slightly distracting qualm in what is otherwise a very nice looking presentation. My score is 3.75.

Pet Shop Boys: Dreamworld features DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 options. Both codecs provide solid listening experiences, though the increased spaciousness of the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is evident pretty much from the get go, with huge synth washes that spread out through the side and rear channels as the concert's credit sequence unspools. The surround track commendably still keeps the vocals mixed forward, but definitely adds some surround activity with regard to both the band and probably especially crowd noises.

While the Blu-ray disc kind of sadly doesn't include any supplements, a nicely designed DigiPack also encloses 2 CDs of the concert as well as a very colorful insert booklet with a ton of photos.

There's some performative weirdness accompanying this energetic concert (what is up with the headgear, guys?), but musically the band sounds great. This can't help but feel a little elegiac or at least nostalgic at times, but that's probably part of the concert's appeal. Video has a few niggling issues, but audio is fine, and the CDs and packaging are enjoyable. Recommended.
