Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard April 23, 2024

Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World is an action-adventure based on a Japanese light novel series created and written by Shinta Fuji. The light novel series was also adapted into a manga featuring art by Masaki Kawakam. The original character designs are by Susumu Kuroi.

Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World features theme music performed by Shunichi Toki (opening) and Mao Abe (ending). Originally broadcast on Tokyo MX, Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World features animation production by Geek Toys (Date A Live IV, Plunderer). The anime series first run was broadcast between January 10th, 2023 and March 28th, 2023. Featuring voice performances by Yūsuke Kobayashi, Sayumi Watabe, and Sayaka Kikuchi.

Nick (Yūsuke Kobayashi) isn’t having a good year. In fact, Nick has arguably hit rock-bottom. Can Nick pick himself up from the ground?

Everything seems to be crumbling around Nick. Nick’s girlfriend decides to break up with him and he gets the boot from his adventure party. What to do?

Nick’s teammates even accuse him of being an embezzler and of not playing by the rules. Now Nick must attempt to move on from his past adventurer team and find something new to carry on. Stumbling upon some fellow adventurers with similar situations and viewpoints, Nick meets the magical Tiana (Sayumi Watabe), ex-priest Zem (Shunichi Toki), and half-human-half-dragon Curran (Sayaka Kikuchi).

Tiana, Zem, and Curran join Nick on a new journey. Each member of the new adventuring party has had terrible past experiences and want to somehow fix the world – to save humanity from betrayal and corruption. Can these adventurers learn to trust one another and save the day?

Nick is an engaging lead character. The character carries the series. The supporting cast of characters add to the production, too. Tiana, Zem, and Curran add to the series with some whimsy that gives everything some more charm. The character designs by Hiroo Nagao are well done and fit these characters nicely. The spunky personalities of the characters are showcased with the designs.

The animation is a clear highlight of the series production. Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World features chief animation direction by Hiroo Nagao (Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART!, My Wife is the Student Council President+!) and art direction by Jung Ho Seo. The series art style adds to the charm of the production. The animators did a solid job with regards to world building. The aesthetic achieved works well for the action and there is something to appreciate there.

The cinematography by Kazuto Horikawa (My Wife is the Student Council President, Nobunaga Teacher's Young Bride) is sleek and achieves a pleasing aesthetic. The series cinematography capably highlights a clear and vibrant cinematographic effect. The series looks colorful, vibrant, and bold. These elements contribute to the series sense of style and highlight the animation well.

The score composed by Ryō Takahashi (Arifureta - From Commonplace to World's Strongest, Classroom of the Elite) is a solid part of the production. The score by Takahashi helps to highlight the action and deliver the goods. The music provides a solid punch to amp up the series drama and it works well as background music for the production.

Written and directed by Itsuki Imazaki (Ai-Mai-Mi, Magical Somera-chan), Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World is a decent and fun action anime with a well-done concept and some fun characters. Imazaki does a solid job with the production and worked well with the animators to bring out some nice qualities in the series. Imazaki blends together adventure and drama for an effective mix. Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World is not a modern classic but it has decent qualities to make for a fun time. The series is worth checking out.

Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The high-definition presentation on the release is outstanding. The background animation and line art look impressive. The crisp and colorful animation is beautiful and looks absorbing in spades. Everything from the character designs to the line art and background art looks impressive on the release.

Blu-ray provides a noteworthy advantage over streaming video services: superior encoding and a more consistent picture. Streaming video services tend to provide lower video bit-rates compared to their physical media counterparts. For videophiles who want to eek out the absolute best possible video quality attainable, the physical format provides an advantage. This will be especially important to enthusiasts who are home theater aficionados. It is also important with regards to action scenes. Sometimes, especially with streaming, action scenes might have more issues with encoding and macroblocking. These issues are usually resolved with physical media and a more consistent bit-rate providing more data to ensure a crisp presentation.

Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don't Believe in Humanity Will Save the World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The sound direction by Ryōsuke Naya (Dropout Idol Fruit Tart, Spy Classroom) is capably highlighted on the release. The lossless audio quality helps the series sound crisp and clear. Dialogue is well reproduced and sounds great on the release. The English dubbed version provides a 5.1 surround sound option. As a result, the surround sound option adds an extra element of immersion for those with advanced surround sound equipment. The surround option will expand the score and sound effects to the rear channels. Purists will still prefer the original Japanese language presentation. The Japanese language audio version might be limited to 2.0 but it sounds great – highlighting the series sound design.

The Blu-ray format provides a significant advantage for audiophiles. Blu-ray continues to reward with an enhanced presentation quality compared to streaming services – offering lossless, high-resolution audio. Streaming video services only provide lossy (non-lossless) audio quality. For audiophiles seeking the best of the best, the physical media format offers a superior viewing option.

The release includes a well-designed limited-edition o-card slipcover. The slipcover features a nice cover art design. The artwork underneath the sleeve also features nice art and it is different from the key art on the slipcover. The set also provides interior art on the back side of the main cover-art. The interior art highlights the cast of characters. This design touch adds to the quality of the package design.

On disc supplements include:

Promo Videos (HD, 5:45)

Commercials (HD, 00:34)

Textless Opening Song (HD, 1:32)

Textless Closing Song (HD, 1:30)

Unfortunately, the on-disc supplements are somewhat sparse and could have been improved overall. The release could have used some audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, roundtable discussions, cast/crew interviews, documentaries, photo galleries, and art galleries. These types of extras would have added some extra value to the release had such inclusions been provided.
