My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1: The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard September 20, 2024

My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is a comedy and fantasy anime series. Created by Nazuna Miki, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 features animation production by Maho Film (By the Grace of the Gods, I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History). The original character designs are by Subachi.

The series features voice-performances by Kaito Ishikawa and Rin Kusumi. Released in North America on streaming and home media by Crunchyroll, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is going to please its target audience. My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 features theme song performances by Nora (opening) and Airi Miyakawa (ending).

Ryōta Satō (Kaito Ishikawa) was nothing but an ordinary office employee. Ryōta lived a boring and dull life. Now things are getting interesting when Ryōta goes from his office day job to becoming a master monster slayer.

Even though Ryōta feels pretty badass for going from his ho-hum office job to being someone monster slaying, Ryōta finds that “master” part of monster slaying is a bit ambitious for him. Ryōta is actually struggling and can’t even seem to get past level 1. Ryōta wants to be the best hero and monster slayer around but can he truly become a master if he can’t get past level 1? Ryōta’s journey is just beginning.

Ryōta is a reasonably worthwhile lead for the series. The character certainly has a lot of odds stacked against him. The heroes journey often is a road with many obstacles. Despite Ryōta’s weak power ranking, Ryōta continues nonetheless.

The character designs by Eri Kojima (I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives., I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History), Kaho Deguchi (By the Grace of the Gods, In the Land of Leadale), Miyako Nishida (Cutie Honey Universe, Blue Miburo), and Yūko Ōba (A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life, Blue Miburo) are well done. The designs certainly suit the central cast of characters.

There is plenty to appreciate about these character design efforts. Though the designs might not be quite as distinct as the most iconic anime series, the results are still notably effective for the genre nonetheless. My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is a reasonably solid showcase for the designer.

The animation on the series is solid and well-done. The series features art direction by Chiho Fukaya (I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History, I'm Standing on 1,000,000 Lives.) and the animation is certainly something that helps enhance the production. The background art and line art make a solid impression. The animators did a decent job with the production and brought together an anime that looks crisp with well-defined artwork.

The cinematography by Yukina Nomura (By the Grace of the Gods, A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life) helps to highlight the animation. Nomura is a talented cinematographer. The artistry certainly shines well with the cinematography. The cinematography is bright and well-lit. These cinematographic qualities help to highlight the series sense of style and to bring out the best in the animation.

The score composed by Endō. (TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You ~High School Days~, Akiba's Trip: The Animation) is solid and it adds to the series production. The score for My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 helps to assist the action scenes and bring out the best in the action-packed adventure. A compelling effort by Endō.

Written by Yuka Yamada (Asteroid in Love, Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters), My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is a decent action series. The concept isn’t that original – it’s been done many times – but it is decent overall. Fans of action anime will find something to appreciate. The central protagonist is a solid lead and Yamada has fun with the character dialogue.

Directed by Yūji Yanase (In the Land of Leadale, I’ll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History), My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is by no means perfect but it does have some entertainment value. Fans of action anime series will find something to appreciate. My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is worth checking out.

My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1 is a decent anime series with colorful animation and a nice lead character. The production values are well done. The series will appeal to fans of light action anime series. While not some sort of modern classic or incredible under- the-radar action epic, the series has entertainment value for the right audience. The series certainly also fits the Shonen anime check box.

The Blu-ray release provides a solid high-definition presentation. The release also includes lossless audio encoding. The release is light on supplements but does include the mini anime episodes – something of value for fans. The first print run of the release also includes a limited o- card slipcover. Recommended.
