La Brea: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker September 8, 2024

NBC's time-traveling science fiction drama 'La Brea: The Complete Series' arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal. Join Gavin (Eoin Macken), Eve (Natalie Zea), Izzy (Zyra Gorecki), Josh (Jack Martin), and the other castaways in time as they struggle to adapt and survive after having been flung back in time to 10,000 B.C. They'll need to overcome dinosaurs, travel to various different times, and confront a host of unexpected dangers if they're going to find a way back home. All 30 episodes are included in this six-disc release. Technical merits are strong, though supplemental material is woefully light. Housed in an attractive slipbox, a Digital Code is not included.

Time travel can be a difficult subject for films and television. Numerous mind-bending issues can be created as people travel back and forth in time trying to avert disaster or send messages loaded with critical information. For the most part, La Brea avoids most time travel-associated pitfalls by keeping such jaunts limited in scope and duration, though there are inevitably moments where issues are created that the series largely ignores. Rather than plumbing the depths of hard-core science fiction as it pertains to this topic, La Brea remains true to its roots and vision by simply being a brisk, breezy, and approachable sci-fi story about modern Californians thrown back to the time of the dinosaurs, painting the tale in large melodramatic strokes and not delving too deeply into the minutia. After a somewhat choppy start, the series hits its stride in the 14-episode second season. The world of 10,000 B.C. is more adequately fleshed out, key characters are identified and justifiably receive the focus they need and deserve, and the intricacies of Gavin's family are finally understood. Plot twists abound to keep viewers on their toes, and the vast majority of them work well within the context of the show. More up to date than the 1970s classic Land of the Lost, not as complex as Continuum and not even remotely as steamy as Outlander, with its fast-paced adventures, novel premise, and attractive and talented cast, La Brea: The Complete Series has something to entice viewers of all ages.

La Brea: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Gone before its time, La Brea's fate was sealed even as it built its world, adjusted its pacing, and found its footing in season two. Season three's six episodes went by quickly, too quickly for its own good at times, but at least the series received the benefit of being able to wrap up its main storylines and provide fitting resolutions for key characters. The brisk, action-focused episodes keep science fiction trappings and details light while crafting a satisfying time-traveling adventure story that becomes more entertaining the further into the story one delves. Technical merits are strong though supplemental material is scant. La Brea: The Complete Series comes recommended to science fiction fans and those looking for an action/drama that's a bit off the beaten path.
