Kung Fu Panda: 4-Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker June 3, 2024

DreamWork's 'Kung Fu Panda: 4-Movie Collection' which collects 'Kung Fu Panda 1 - 4' arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Universal. This set, comprised of four Blu-ray discs (one for each feature film) and one DVD (the 'Awesome Bonus Disc' from the 'Ulitmate Edition of Awesomeness' 2016 re-releases of 'Kung Fu Panda' and 'Kung Fu Panda 2'), is sure to delight established fans and newcomers alike. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Ian McShane, Gary Oldman, Bryan Cranston, Awkwafina, and Viola Davis, the spectacular animation and fast-paced stories the films have become one of the most-loved animated film franchises of the modern era. Graced with top-notch video transfers and audio tracks, as well as hours of bonus content, this space- and money-saving collection deserves a spot in every film- lover's collection. An embossed slipcover and Digital Code are also included.

When the first Kung Fu Panda film arrived on the scene in 2008, I'm not certain that anyone was prepared for how popular the film and its characters would become. Over the ensuing years that initial tale of an unlikely hero named Po, voiced by the irrepressible Jack Black, would spawn three television series totaling almost 150 episodes, a television holiday special, and three star-studded film sequels with a total global gross box office of over $2 billion dollars. It's a story almost as incredible as Po's; just a panda with a dream who went from working in a noodle shop to becoming the Dragon Warrior and saving the world (more than once).

It's not necessary to be a fan of martial arts movies to have an appreciation of the animated physical prowess on display in these four films. However, those who have spent time with films from the Shaw Brothers, Bruce Lee, and Jackie Chan, to mention a few will likely be rewarded when they find more than a few references and allusions to classic martial arts film tropes, set pieces, moves, and poses. Not mere kid stuff, while the films are certainly family-friendly fare there is something in each of these films that will appeal to viewers of all ages. And as has become the expectation with high-profile DreamWorks animated releases, there is plenty of material in the video presentation to marvel at in close-ups and wider shots alike. Few animated intellectual properties have proved so enduring with no perceived dip in quality as the franchise wears on, and, in fact, the newest installment is the second highest-grossing film in the series. While perhaps not deep and tought-provoking, the films never fail to entertain with Jack Black consistently impressing with his outstanding portrayal of Po, the role he was born to play.

Kung Fu Panda: 4-Movie Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Featuring entertaining and action-packed stories that are suitable for film fans of all ages, Kung Fu Panda: 4-Movie Collection will provide hours of viewing enjoyment. Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, and James Hong are featured in each of the films, with a veritable who's who of Hollywood populating the rest of the casts. The animation in each outing is impressive, with realistic furs, fabric textures, and environments on display in the virtually flawless video presentations. The audio tracks likewise do not disappoint, boasting incredible precision, clarity, and depth, with nary a word of dialogue missed in the sometimes raucous shenanigans and heroics of Po and/or the Furious Five as they battle their assorted foes. A massive amount of supplemental material is included as well, and while much of it is geared toward younger viewers, there is plenty in the commentaries and other elements for more mature audiences to enjoy. The Kung Fu Panda: 4-Movie Collection comes highly recommended.
