Released in 1972, the original album is a collection of singles, albumtracks and outtakes which charted across the world. This newly expanded edition, Still Living in the Past, features Steven Wilson remixes, edits, demos, Live at Carnegie Hall 1970 (Steven Wilson Remix) and four promo films. Since Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull were kind enough to start this album out with a tune for yours truly, I'm kind of obligated to give this release a sterling review. I'm joking of course, but a previously unreleased remix of Song for Jeffrey is just one of many delights Rhino has aggregated for yet another kind of gobsmacking release that combines lossless audio of the source album (in both stereo and 5.1) as well a veritable glut of bonus material on both the Blu-ray and CDs included in this set. While the Blu-ray disc offered in this set is primarily audio, there are four promo videos included as well.

Jethro Tull: Still Living in the Past includes four promo videos as its video component, with AVC encoded 1080i transfers in 1.33:1. The four videos are:
The Witch's Promise (March 1970 Promo Film, directed by Piers Bedford)These are obviously old and in some cases not particularly well curated, and so there are lots of scratches, blemishes and even unstable frames, but it's still fun to see Ian and the guys cavorting on stage. There's a minor video component with regard to the album, as well, with individual track names appearing under key art.
Teacher (UK Single Version, March 1970 Promo Film, directed by Piers Bedford)
Teacher (US Album Version, March 1970 Promo Film, directed by Piers Bedford)
Life Is A Long Song (September 1971 Promo Film, unknown director)

Jethro Tull: Still Living in the Past offers a cornucopia of versions of the album and related tracks in either DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 or LPCM
2.0. I'm sure some will be aching for yet another brilliant Steven Wilson Atmos mix, and I'm not entirely certain why one wasn't crafted for this
release, but both the stereo and surround offerings here are superb. As can be gleaned in the credits, the contents here combine efforts from several
different remixes and/or remasters, but there's an inviting consistency of sound throughout, with faultless fidelity and appealing dynamic range. Kind of
interestingly, some of the most noticeable separation in the surround versions can be heard in some relatively "simple" arrangements, as in the band's
charming adaptation of Bach's Bourrée, where flutes are nicely forward and the bass anchored toward the rear, offering a really spacious
"middle ground" where everything meets. Ian's infectious vocals tend to be front and center, leaving the side and rear channels engaged with the
various instruments.
While probably best heard as a curio, the flat transfers on the Blu-ray are quite instructive in terms of how a "no tweaks" version sounds, and frankly
how much nuance and artistry Wilson brings to the literal mix. The Carnegie Hall tracks obviously have some of the vagaries of a live performance, but
are remarkably solid and feature excellent clarity and a refreshing lack of consistently overwhelming audience noise.

This is another almost overwhelming release from Rhino where one fan's "extras" may be another fan's "main feature", but with the readership of this
site in mind, I'm counting the CDs as supplements, and the contents of those are as follows:

1. Introduction to Sossity; You're A Woman [2.51]Additionally, this is housed in what amounts to a rather large DigiBook, with two CDs in both the front and rear cover plastic inserts (for a total of four), and with the fifth CD kind of "hidden" in the first "page" of the DigiBook, which is in fact a sleeve. That sleeve strategy is duplicated at the back of the DigiBook, which is where the Blu-ray disc is housed. The actual "book" part is an amazing array of writing, lots of stills, backgrounds on the songs and lyrics.
2. Sossity; You're A Woman (including Reasons For Waiting) [5.36]
3. Introduction to Dharma For One [1.36]
4. Dharma For One [21.31]

It's taken almost two full days to simply get through the full contents of the Blu-ray disc included in this set, and I've only just begun to sample all of the goodies on the CDs, but this is easily another standout release from Rhino. I'll close this review with a confession of sorts that when I was probably not yet a teenager a buddy of mind excitedly ran up to me and told me Jethro Tull would be giving a live performance in our fair city, and I responded cluelessly, "Who's he?" I of course know better know, and Still Living in the Past is a potent reminder of just how innovative and flat out fun Tull was (and continues to be). There is a virtual avalanche of material on this release, and the Blu-ray disc sounds great even without an Atmos mix. Highly recommended.
