A crowd-pleasing underdog sports movie with shades of Zootopia, Tyree Dillihay's GOAT was famously produced (and clearly inspired) by NBA superstar Steph Curry. Sony Pictures touts it as being "from the artists that brought you KPop Demon Hunters" (a little late on the support there, guys), but there's more to like about this lightweight drama-comedy than colorful, dazzling animation with a lot of personality. Not much more, mind you, but GOAT is still a decent first-round pick for family movie night that'll play pretty well even if you're not a huge fan of basketball.

As usual, please see my recent review of the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack for a general overview of the film's visual style and overall aesthetic, which largely maintains the stylish look of Sony Animation's previous films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse, and of course KPop Demon Hunters. While the Blu-ray's 1080p / SDR transfer is obviously outmatched by its UHD counterpart, it's basically a draw in the detail department since GOAT is a native 2K production and it performs very well overall (within format expectations) in all expected areas including color, shadow detail, and contrast. It's not as thick and robust in direct comparison and the there's also a bit less depth to the visual experience here (mostly due to Blu-ray's unavoidably lower bit rate and less efficient codec)... but on small to medium displays, this disc will look extremely good and it'll still draw you in to GOAT's visually polished world.

As usual for Sony, this Blu-ray disc sadly lacks the Dolby Atmos audio of its 4K counterpart and features a still-strong DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix as its default option. I wrote a few comments about this scaled-back but solid track in my separate review of the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack, so click the link for more details.
Optional subtitles, including English (SDH), are offered during the film and all extras listed below.

This one-disc set ships in a keepcase with poster-themed cover artwork (identical to the 4K/Blu-ray combo pack) and a Digital Copy redemption code is also tucked inside. The included bonus features, listed below and detailed in the linked review, are predictably lightweight and mostly surface-level but add some fun to the experience.

Tyree Dillihay's GOAT is a standard-issue underdog sports drama at its core, but one that's dressed up with loads of visual flair and a Zootopia-lite backdrop that leaves extra room for animal-based comedy and creativity. While the end result may not be true four-star material, it's still a fun flick that should appeal to the whole family. Sony's stand-alone Blu-ray combo pack comes in second to their 4K/Blu-ray combo pack but still offers solid A/V merits and several fun extras. Nonetheless, it comes Recommended, especially for new fans looking to save a few bucks.
