A nostalgic return to a fan-favorite anime series

FLCL returns with a double-whammy punch of a sequel that includes two new seasons of the cult-favorite anime series which won acclaim and a loyal fan-base in North America when it aired on Cartoon Network in the early 2000's. The follow-up anime includes FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative and each spin-off sequel follows the continued misadventures of the rambunctious alien Haruko as she becomes intertwined in the lives of young people in Japan. Featuring more music by the beloved Japanese rock band, The Pillows, the sequels promise audiences more zany exploits, fantastic animation, and a rockin' good soundtrack.

FLCL: Progressive / Alternative: Two-Series Collection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

Each FLCL sequel season is presented on Blu-ray from Cartoon Network & WB with a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition presentation in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. Each sequel is presented on its own individual Blu-ray disc.

FLCL: Progressive / Alternative: Two-Series Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

Having grown up on the golden years of Toonami and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, FLCL was a magical experience to have viewed on television when it first premiered back in 2003. The original is always going to stand as one of my favorites due to the whimsical storytelling (which has something truly important to say about growing up), the radical animation, and the killer tunes by The Pillows. The idea of new sequels to the original left me both excited and a little nervous about how the great original could be explored again after so many years.

I am pleased to say I enjoyed revisiting FLCL with both FLCL: Progressive and FLCL: Alternative and found both to be engaging follow-up sequels to expand on the original universe of FLCL. Though neither sequel stands up to the classic status of the original, both productions manage to take the original series in a new direction (with new characters) while managing to keep much of the feel and energy of the original. Its also a blast to have the zany Haruko back in my life (as she returns for the re-mix). Fans of the original will undoubtedly want to keep expectations in check but know that there are still enough moments of whimsy to make the return a worthwhile one.
