In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A. apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.

The vagaries of "boutique labels" licensing various offerings from major studios results in some interesting offerings, and in this case home studio Warner Brothers released Evil Dead Rise 4K fewer than three years ago (as this review is being written), one of the shorter "turnarounds" in recent memory. As my colleague Randy Miller III mentioned in his review (linked to below), Warner's own release(s) in both 4K UHD and 1080 were shockingly devoid of supplements, and so this Arrow release, which more or less ports over the pre-existing Warner produced 4K master, may be of most interest to fans for its typically well appointed bonus material.

Note: This release does not include a 1080 Blu-ray, so these screenshots are taken directly from the 4K UHD disc and downscaled to 1080
and SDR. Color space in particular is therefore not accurate, and I recommend those interested to look at some of the screenshots in Randy's 1080
Evil Dead Rise Blu-ray review of Warner Brothers' own
release for a probably better representation of the palette. Since this release does not include a 1080 disc, the 2K video score above has been
intentionally left blank.
Evil Dead Rise is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Arrow Video with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 2.39:1. Arrow's insert
booklet has only a bit of generic information about the presentation:
Evil Dead Rise is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1 with Dolby Atmos and 5.1 DTS-HD MA audio.Probably unsurprisingly given the fact that the above minimal information suggests that Arrow didn't do any further work on a pre-delivered master this time around, this is obviously a match for Warner Brothers' own 4K release from a few years ago. As Randy Miller III cheekily (and correctly) commented, the film wallows in what Randy calls David Fincher Dark™, and the 4K presentation offers some really nicely articulated contrast and shadow detail courtesy of the HDR / Dolby Vision grades (unlike Warner Brothers' 4K release, this one from Arrow does not include a 1080 presentation, so any comparative comments are moot). As Randy mentioned with regard to Warner's own release, while the HDR grades may not be "showy" in the same way that consistently brighter or at least better lit offerings may be, there are still really rather remarkable pops of color throughout, especially once the carnage starts unfolding. The few brightly lit moments, as in the dockside moments very early on, and a few interstitial vignettes later (some also involving water), the palette pops appealingly. Despite the oppressive darkness, detail levels are commendably intact throughout. Some of the practical and CGI makeup effects are also very well done. The film is presented in 4K resolution in HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
The 4K master was made available by Warner Bros.

As with Warner's own release, Arrow's disc also contains a Dolby Atmos track, but this disc has a really informative and interesting supplement from an actual Dolby Institute interview with Lee Cronin and Peter Albrechtsen, along with a whole separate interview with Albrechtsen, both of which help to provide some background and context for the film's involving sound design. Randy's review of the Warner Brothers release highlights some standout moments, and I'll echo his regard for some of the opening surround activity in particular, including some startle effects that will in fact probably jolt listeners' sensibilities. Despite the cloistered environments the film exploits, there is regular engagement of all of the surround channels, with creepy discrete channelization of effects helping to establish the increasingly nightmarish ambience. The final showdown is another standout of almost whirlwind surround activity. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English subtitles are available.

Fans of Evil Dead Rise were probably somewhat shocked (along with Randy) to see that Warner Brothers' own releases in 1080 and 4K UHD of this film did not offer any bonus content. Arrow has come to the rescue, offering both some really appealing and informative supplements along with its typically secure technical presentation. Recommended.
