Though it wasn't conceived or shot as such, Carolina Caroline is an almost flawless homage to Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw. It is almost flawless because it could have revealed plenty from the Deep South. Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina can offer breathtaking locations for a genre film like Carolina Caroline.

In Texas, small-time cheater Caroline (Samara Weaving) crosses paths with full-time conman Oliver (Kyle Gallner). Mesmerized by his tricks and looks, Caroline goes on a date with him and then decides to become his partner. After Caroline learns a bunch of new tricks from Oliver, the two begin hitting various small banks throughout the Deep South. In South Carolina, Caroline discovers her estranged mother (Kyra Sedgwick), a miserable alcoholic, and half an hour later concludes that she is lucky to have been raised by her father (Jon Gries). Deeply hurt by the failed reunion and dreaming of resetting her life away from the South, Caroline then asks Oliver to up their game and make enough money to leave the country. However, shortly after, the FBI and local authorities begin tracking them down.

Directed by Nebraska native Adam Rehmeier, Carolina Caroline is a lean, well-polished, pretty little thriller that is practically impossible to dislike. Virtually all its charm comes from the excellent chemistry between its leads, both of whom do not try to do more with their characters than needed. This may sound like a largely meaningless detail, but too many lovers-on-the-run films like Carolina Caroline fail to impress precisely because their leads try to give their characters much wider ranges of emotions and bigger personalities.

The lack of authentic, diverse footage from the Deep South is impossible to brush aside. Apparently, Rehmeier and the producers of Carolina Caroline agreed that several locations in Kentucky and Indiana could successfully replace the various locations the leads visit on their way to South Carolina. This was an unfortunate decision because authentic footage from the Deep South is always very special and could have instantly infused Carolina Caroline with terrific atmosphere.

However, an outstanding selection of classic and contemporary country and rock tracks just about makes up for it. Their timing is flawless and, frankly, a big reason why Carolina Caroline looks and feels like a legitimate homage to Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw. Among these tracks are “Shooting Star” by Bad Company, “Parachute” by Chris Stapleton, “Hard Workin’ Man” by Captain Beefheart and Jack Nitzsche, “Help Me Make it Through the Night” by Sammi Smith, and “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell.

Rehmeier has directed five films to date. Carolina Caroline is the first not to be based on one of his screenplays. It is based on an original screenplay by Tom Dean, who co-directed the indie romantic dramedy Charlie Harper, which is scheduled to have its American premiere this September.

Presented in an aspect ratio of 2.39:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Carolina Caroline arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Magnolia Home Entertainment.

The entire film looks gorgeous in high-definition. While this should not be surprising given that it was made just a year ago, I felt plenty of the outdoor and darker indoor footage was equally great. Delineation, clarity, and depth looked wonderful on my system. Color reproduction was impressive as well. However, there is quite a bit of contemporary stylizing, so some particular contrasts can appear somewhat exaggerated. Image stability is excellent. The entire film is placed on a single-layer disc. Some small optimizations may be possible, but I did not encounter any distracting anomalies to report in our review. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-A or Region-Free player in order to access its content).

There is only one standard audio track on this Blu-ray release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature. When turned on, they appear inside the image frame.

The lossless 5.1 track easily handles all action footage and music in the best way possible. However, the soundtrack is finalized really well, too. In many areas, the action material and music come together incredibly well. All exchanges are very clear, sharp, stable, and easy to follow. I had the volume of my system turned up quite a bit because I loved the soundtrack, and I did not notice any anomalies to report in our review.

Carolina Caroline is a terrific little film. The only way it could have turned out even better is if Adam Rehmeier had been given enough money to shoot it on location throughout the Deep South. Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, and South Carolina can offer breathtaking locations for a genre film like Carolina Caroline. Regardless, I loved it and most likely will include it on my Top Ten list at the end of the year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
