One of the most beloved film trilogies returns to 4K UHD disc in the 'Back to the Future: 40th Anniversary Trilogy 4K' courtesy of Universal. This new 8-disc set (3 4K UHD discs and 5 Blu-ray discs) includes all three films and over nine (9) hours of supplemental content, including a Blu-ray disc containing almost ninety minutes of new material. The films star Michael J. Fox as the time-travelling high-schooler Marty McFly, and Christopher Lloyd as inventor Doctor Emmett Brown, alongside actors such as Leah Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, and Elizabeth Shue. Please scroll down to the 'Special Features and Extras' section below for an accounting of the new disc of supplemental material. An embossed and foil-enhanced slipbox, and a Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included.

As the UHD and Blu-ray discs included in this set are identical to those released previously, please follow the links below for an assessment of the video presentation for each of the three films.

All of the legacy features are brought forward here, giving viewers a substantial amount of bonus content to explore when/if so moved. The big news here is that this release also features a new Blu-ray disc containing approximately 90 minutes of never-before seen bonus content, as detailed below.

Back to the Future: 40th Anniversary Trilogy 4K features the same transfers of these enduring and beloved films and all associated legacy supplemental material from the 2020 release with the addition of a Blu-ray disc of new supplemental material. In my opinion, the supplements are laid- out in rank order fashion, with 40 Years Later: Reflecting on the Future being the most substantive, and A Mystery in History being the lightest, but each is interesting and worth a watch for fans. Those buying the films for the first time or who have yet to upgrade the films to UHD would be well-served in doing so with this release. Whether or not the new bonus disc is sufficient grounds to warrant a double (or triple) dip, is a matter for individual discretion. This iconic trilogy looks and sounds great, and is now joined by more on-disc extras than ever before. Highly recommended.
